Vanilla pods have a subtle sweet aroma that lends itself beautifully to baking. Vanilla is an evergreen vine found in tropical forests and was originally used by the Aztec people in Mexico to flavour cacao and is still in high demand today. Vanillin has antimicrobial properties and has been used as a stimulant and an aphrodisiac. Its characteristic slightly floral flavour is only released after the fruit is dried and cured after steaming and fermentation. Split the vanilla pods lengthways and remove the black seeds to add them to your recipe.

How to Use

The pods can be used either whole or split to disperse the aromatic seeds, which can be scraped out and added to custards, ice cream, etc. The pods can then be stored in a sugar jar to impart their flavour, or they can be infused directly in custards, creams and milk puddings.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store in an air tight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Up to 12 months when stored as above.
